Telecommunication – challenges to connectivity.

Broadband is becoming a prerequisite to economic and social development. This also applies to the Arctic. Digitally connecting remote Arctic communities is the only way of ensuring that they reach their full potential. This also supports their long-term sustainability.

Infrastructure, communications and IT are one of the selected business areas of the Arctic Economic Council (AEC). The work in this area is being carried out by the Infrastructure: Telecommunications Working Group chaired by Robert McDowell.

Together with partners, the AEC Working Group on Telecommunications hosted a Top of the World Arctic Broadband Summit in Barrow, Alaska in 2016. This Side Event will gather experts on their respective fields to continue the discussion based on the work of the AEC Working Group.

This event will start with a panel focusing on challenges related to connectivity in the Arctic. The format is interactive, and the floor will be opened for questions and comments from the audience.
