The Embassy of Finland in Canada, Arctic Economic Council and Team Arctic Finland organized a joint arctic event in Montreal February 20th.  The event, Passion Arctic Business: Canada-Finland – new opportunities during the Finnish Chairmanships 2017-2019, brought together 25 participants from the maritime and shipping industry.

The event comprised two parts: the first part discussed business opportunities in the Arctic and High North and provide insight of Team Arctic Finland. They are a consortium of 19 Finnish companies and organizations experienced in challenging projects in maritime, offshore and infrastructure.

Chair of the AEC Maritime Transportation Working Group, and representing Team Arctic Finland moderated this session. This first session offered active thematic discussions on topics such as shipping and shipping services, and special vessel needs operating in challenging ice conditions.

The second part of the event presented the Arctic Economic Council, its role in Arctic cooperation between nations and businesses, operations strategy, as well as target areas for the AEC Chair and Arctia CEO Tero Vauraste’s Chairmanship period 2017-2019. Arctia is a Finnish company that provides icebreaking and specialized multipurpose vessel services in polar areas. Mr.Vesa Lehtonen, Ambassador of Finland gave the Ambassador’s outlook to Arctic cooperation. This gave an introduction to the latter part of the event where Mikko Niini presented the AEC and the Chairmanship of Finnish Business Industry.  The event was successful in creating a platform for Finnish and Canadian companies to establish fruitful contacts and establish ground for future collaboration.
